Chapter Five
Clay pulled up to the stop sign and peered down at his phone. Another two blocks. He looked both ways and went on down the deserted street, shaking his head as he passed boarded up strip centers covered with graffiti. He wondered for the hundredth time what the hell Justin was doing here, miles from home. Justin hadnât said much other than that heâd walked halfway across town and didnât have the money for a motel. Heâd asked Clay for a loan so he could get a room, but no way was Clay letting him stay in the dump down the block. Heâd raided his stash and brought enough money to put Justin up in a decent hotel. From what Justin said, going home wasnât an option.
Or Clay could take him to Bearâs house.
He drove slowly down another block and spotted Justin sitting on a curb. He pulled over as his boyfriend stood and ran to the truck. The overhead light went on and Clay gasped at the shiner swelling Justinâs eye nearly shut. âWhat the hell happened?â
Justin winced. âDifference of opinion with Russell.â
âRussell? What the fuck?â
Justin snapped on his seat belt. âIt was about you.â
âMe?â Clay set his GPS for home and started down the street.
âI made the mistake of thinking theyâd be okay with me taking you to Homecoming. Tolerant and broad-minded, you know. Apparently winning an election takes precedence. I was told to either shut up and knuckle under or get out of the house.â
âAnd got cold-cocked in the process.â
âYep.â Justin muttered. âI didnât even say no. All I did was ask what if I didnât.â
âShit. Sounds like they mean it.â
âThey do.â
âWhy are they so vehement about you coming out? I thought you said they were tolerant.â
âRussell and the precinct chairman think being sympathetic to gay causes will hurt her with the military and retired military in our district.â
âSo youâre a gay cause now?â
âGuess so.â
Clay turned the corner and pulled onto the expressway. âYou couldâve gone along with them. I wouldâve understood.â
âI know, but I couldnât. I want to take you to Homecoming. I want the world to know youâre my boyfriend.â
âItâs more than me and Homecoming, isnât it?â
âYeah, it is. Iâm tired of living a lie. I want to be who I am, and I want to start as I mean to go, which means taking you to Homecoming. If I get kicked out, so be it. Youâre worth it.â
âI see.â
âDid you bring some money for a hotel room?â
âYeah, thereâs a bunch of nice places a couple of blocks from the house.â
They fell silent. Clay glanced across the seat at Justinâs shiner. It took real courage for Justin to walk out of his home. He couldâve taken the easy route, but he hadnât because he thought Clay was âworth it.â
If Justin thought Clay was worth it, maybe he needed to start being worth it.
Clay glanced down at the GPS and took the Austin Highway exit. Justin looked around. âI know the area. Thereâs a bunch of motels along here.
